Stories have differed about how Peter Dursin became afflicted with his spiny epidermis, one widely-circulated tale being that it was a curse laid upon him by an inhabitant of Zrfff, the extradimensional realm from which Mr Mxyzptlk originated. However, his powers were observed to be of far longer duration than the usual Zrfffian affliction, so this theory can be largely discounted.

The generally-accepted account was that Peter was a mutant born with unusually scaly skin that, as he matured, developed into spines resembling the quills of a porcupine – spines that discharged, propelling themselves a distance of several feet from his body, when he became fearful or angry.

He applied for membership in the Legion of Super-Heroes but, although he had learned to jettison his spines at will, he had learned no control over the direction of his quills’ trajectory. When his power was activated, the quills launched in a roughly spherical pattern in all directions, potentially incapacitating friend and foe alike. He was rejected.

But there was a consolation; he had made the acquaintance of INfectious Lass, and their shared rejection had forged a bond between the pair. Together, they enlisted in the Legion of Substitute Heroes, using their admittedly imperfect powers for the greater good.

Sadly, Pete's effectiveness as a member of the Subs was limited. But he was well-liked because of his good humour and gentle nature.
