Eight Kryptonian criminals escaped from the Phantom Zone and secretly set up home in the abandoned town of Drywood Gulch. They lured Lois Lane there, and told her some cock-and-bull story about having survived Krypton's destruction. Later, when Superman arrived, the criminals forced him to a showdown - but he tricked them and returned them to the Phantom Zone.
