Clark Kent summoned Hercules, Samson, and Atlas to help save Metropolis in an emergency when he was otherwise occupied, but did not suspect that he had summoned the evil counterparts of these heroes from a parallel Earth.

The three 'heroes' quickly showed their evil side, so Superman created a fake identity, 'Omni-Menace', allegedly a more evil villain from a time before those of Hercules, Samson and Atlas. The three villains became terrified of Omni-Menace, and seized the opportunity to return to their own time (and universe).

Scientists from Kandor had been monitoring the situation, and were able to reassure Superman that his three heroic friends had not turned bad - they were from a parallel world.
