Jonathan Cheval was an honest businessman skilled in the field of grinding and polishing lenses. Financial trouble ruined his business, and Cheval became a criminal using lens-based weapons. Cheval became an adversary of Hawkman and the Justice Society of America. The Monocle was also one of the villains offered membership to Ultra-Humanite's Secret Society of Super Villains.
Note:In Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, the Monocle died in Manhunter vol 3 #9 (Jun 2005), killed by Kate Spencer, the Manhunter.
