Jimmy Olsen was a young reporter and photographer who worked for the Daily Planet newspaper in Metropolis. He was quick-witted, kind-natured, intelligent and impulsive. These qualities meant that he often got into scrapes and had to be rescued by Superman, but it also meant that on many occasions he was able to help Superman when he was in difficulties. Superman ad Jimmy became close friends, and Superman gave him a special signal-watch with a supersonic alram that he could use to call Superman in emergencies.

Jimmy underwent numerous transformations in his adventures, including Wolf-Man, Human Octopus, Human Porcupine, Bizarro and Giant Turtle-Man. He wore many disguises. He acquired super-powers several times - and lost them again. He sometimes took a special serum, created by Professor Potter, that gave him the temporary power to stretch his body like rubber: he adopted the codename 'Elastic Lad' when he did this.

Jimmy had an on/off romantic relationship with Lois Lane's younger sister, Lucy, but it was clear to everyone but Jimmy that Lucy only used him as a convenient boyfriend and admirer when no-one better was available.
