Sapphire Stagg married wealthy Wally Bannister, and Metamorpho broke away from Simon Stagg with some help from Element Girl. He was then recruited by a mysterious man known as Mister Shadow to seek out the hidden valley of Ma-Phoor. There, he encountered Jezeba, its queen, who looked just like Sapphire, and claimed to be over 2,000 years old. She identified him as Algon, the Ancient Element Man, a hero from the past.
