Don-El was the son of Nim-El and his wife, Dondra Klu-Ta. He survived Krypton's destrcution because he lived in the city of Kandor, so was there when the city was shrunk by the villain Brainiac, and placed inside a bottle.
When the Bottle City of Kandor was safely kept in Superman's Fortress of Solitude, Don-El was its police chief. he was also a member of the Superman Emergency Squad - a team of Kandorians who occasionally left the bottle to assist Superman.
