The Dominators had secretly taken control of Earth, but hid behind the façade of a puppet human government - ‘Earthgov’. When the Dominators detonated a series of powerspheres on the planet, the chaos that this brought about had some major effects: the SW6 batch of Legionnaires were freed; the Null Radiation gave Devlin O'Ryan his energy-reflection powers; and it stripped Dirk Morgna of his heat and light radiation abilities.
Morgna had allied himself to the puppet Earthgov, and was used as its public face. Consequently he was probably the most hated human on earth, a focus of anti-government sentiment. His position gave him few benefits, other than a level of comfort and the introduction to Circe, Chief of the Science Police, who became his lover. There are suggestions that he was helping the resistance, providing Science Police Officer Shvaughn Erin with what information he had, but no-one ever confirmed that.
Like most of Earth, he had no idea that he would be caught in a Null Radiation explosion, or that he would end up an almost fleshless human. Found by the Dominators who recorded his mental ramblings, the records showed his incipient paranoia and feelings of insecurity. Believing himself to be disliked and envied, he’d chosen to seek a route of adulation.
The Dominators saw him as just another useful genetic experiment, and put him into one of their pods, found eventually by the Strategic Underground Battle Squad (S.U.B.S.). Too involved to shut down the pod, the SUBS left him, but Dirk eventually got free and was found soon after by the SW6 Legionnaires.
Put into solitary confinement, he was held a prisoner because of his alliance with the Dominators. Circe persuaded the Legionnaires to allow her into the cell and, in an act of love and mercy, killed him and then herself.
