Deeja Kathoon gained hypnotic control over several ghosts, and compelled them to commit frightening and memorable crimes in order to implicate the Spectre. Detective Jim Corrigan was assigned to capture the suspect. Kathoon introduced himself to Corrigan's boss, the Chief of Police, and claimed to have occult knowledge that would enable him to capture the Spectre. And he very nearly was successful at this, as during a seance Kathoon was indeed able to force the Spectre to appear, and to freeze him in place briefly. But the Spectre dematerialized and got away.
The Astral Avenger returned to the fray, disguised as one of Kathoon's own ghosts, but Kathoon saw through this ploy, and hypnotically compelled the Spectre to go destroy a hospital. Seemingly from nowhere, the Ring of Life appeared and broke the spell. Deeja Kathoon then attempted to escape in a rocketship, but the Spectre pursued and destroyed it, killing Kathoon, then the Spectre grabbed Kathoon's ghost and hurled it into a fiery nebula, destroying him forever.
