As a youth, Slade escaped an abusive childhood by joining the US Army. He married fellow soldier Adeline Kane, and they had a son, Grant. Slade got to know David Isherwood, William Randolph Wintergreen, and John Lynch. He volunteered for an experimental procedure, but instead of turning him into the perfect soldier, his body reacted badly. He left the army and took other jobs, but ultimately ended up as a mercenary assassin for hire. Eventually, Slade fathered a second son with Adeline, Joseph.
