He suffered a head trauma that resulted in a personality change and he started acting as if he were the Black Knight. For his sanity's sake (and hoping that he would lead them to the hidden jewels from the earlier robberies), his gang and the law enforcers played along with the situation, pretending that everything was set on the Arthurian Legend.
