Mary Elizabeth - usually known as Bette - Kane, was the niece of a rich Gotham City’s socialite, Kathy Kane. Living in different city of her aunt she visited her once a year and it was on one of her annual visits that Bette discovered that her aunt was Batwoman. Bette confronted her aunt and she started to be her sidekick as Bat-Girl.
