Abyss, by means unknown, acquired possession of a powerful object, a void ring, that opened a dimensional portal to another realm, the 'Void universe', where it is so cold and empty that anyone sent there is deeply traumatised and unable to function. Soon after acquiring the ring, Abyss joined the Presidential Oversight Watch, a so-called 'superhero' team under the rule of President Leland McCauley, who turned out to be the 20th Century terrorist, Ra's al Ghul, in disguise.
